Mandate For Marriage: The Coalition for African American Pastors Speaks Out

Reverend William Owens, president and founder of the Coalition for African American Pastors and members gather to announce a “Mandate for Marriage” to President Barak Obama.

Taken from Joe Newby of the Examiner:

A 1300-member coalition of African-American pastors are calling on blacks to boycott President Obama and sign a petition demanding the administration withdraw support for gay marriage, the Washington Examiner reported Friday.

“The black church has always been the conscience of America, and today we are calling on black pastors and black Christians to withhold support from President Obama until he corrects course,” Rev. William Owens, president of the Memphis-based coalition, said on Friday.

The Coalition of African-American Pastors had requested a meeting last month with the administration to discuss the issue, but says it was snubbed by Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder.

“By embracing gay marriage, President Obama is leading the country down an immoral path,” Owens added. “Some things are bigger than the next election.”

“By embracing gay marriage, President Obama is leading the country down an immoral path,” Owens added. “Some things are bigger than the next election.”

In May, Obama announced that he was reverting to his 1996 position supporting gay marriage.

In 2004, however, he said that “marriage is between a man and a woman.”

In 2008, Obama said he supported civil unions, but opposed gay marriage, and in 2010, he said his position was “evolving.”

Even though Obama now supports gay marriage, the Washington Examiner notes that the President never suggested “he would push for a federal mandate allowing same-sex marriages to take place.”

The group also called on the African, Methodist and Episcopal Church to denounce Obama’s support of gay marriage, but Paul Bedard wrote that “seems unlikely since the AME Church Convention, which met in Nashville last week, had first lady Michelle Obama speak.”

The coalition supports African-American pastors who believe marriage should be between a man and a woman, and has started an online petition in hopes of changing Obama’s mind. That petition can be seen at 100000signatures4marriage.com.

“We were once proud of President Obama,” Rev. Owens said, “but our pride has turned to shame.”

Your Voice, Your Vote

So what do you think about this? Is Obama leading America down an immoral path? Is this the start of a war between the religious and the LGBT communities? Or do you think the president has more pressing issues to be dealing with?

He has already been at war with the religious community over healthcare and now the religious community is weighing in more and more about Obama’s “evolution” into the sanctity of marriage.

Some think the President’s “evolution” is voter driven and not genuine. Does it matter or is this politricks working for Obama?

Personally I wish he would talk only jobs, healthcare, and education. However his constant dabbling in non-pressing issues makes me wonder who does he think he is fooling? Sure the LGBT community is on board, but last I checked they needed jobs and healthcare as well.

I think this debate and his constant attacks at the religious community are not wise and I do wish Obama would just focus on the hope and change we need to sustain our families, whatever they may look like!

Peace Family,

WW

  1. Ok, these pastors need to tell me how do u stop folks from being gay. many of them come out the church and they have families. I agree with Wonderwoman that I wish the prez would just focus on jobs. I understand that gay folks want to be able to act on their family’s behalf as any other family. We all have at least one gay person in our family and if they are with some one that makes them happy and they want to be family, its all right with me. When these pastors can show me how u stop folks from being gay so we won’t have this issue than I will support them. Other than that a human being is a human being not matter who they choose to be.

    • We, as a people, have lost all of our morals and values. Anything that makes people happy does not make it right. If that is the case, then pedophiles should be left alone because having sex with children makes them happy. These pedophiles are no more normal than people who are gay. It is a pleasure thing involving sex. I have always said that what ones does in his/her bedroom is their business but when you are attempting to force your beliefs on society, those who are opposed also have a right to fight back. Just very very sorry the President allowed himself to get caught up in this.

  2. you did the right thing by the Bibleand God ….he created a man and a women ,and thats the way it shouh be .Other wise yu would have men together and women together, and that ain’t normal it goes against God.Thank you Pastors for your issue on this. let the truth be Gods truth

  3. I am so very proud of the steps the Church is now taking regarding this same sex issue. For a while now I’ve been feeling sad at how this country that we’ve invested so much of our lives seem to just dump all the values that we’ve worked hard to live by. I knew that some how God would wakeup the hearts and souls of those who have the means to address this mad reasoning and began the process of correcting it. Mr. Obama, it’s really SAD that you could forsake all the people you’ve let down just to be big in the eyes of those who need the Church in the first place.
I sincerely Welcome back the CHURCH that we seem to had lost!

  4. Agreed it is time the Church be heard, especially on issues of morality. Sadly this administration has backed the Church into walls regarding morality, healthcare, abortion, and a host of other things. The church needs to start being the Gospel in a weary time of storm!!
    Peace,

  7. This is the most foolish thing the black church has ever done!!!! Why would you not vote for Obama … becuase of his views regarding gay marriage…. thier are sooo many more important things that he has to deal with other than some homophobic church folks not understanding peoples right!!!!

  8. A Godless country, with the leaders having no fear of God. A country whose leaders have defiled the natural order of events, a country who professes to be God’s own country but does things that are most detestable before the almighty God. A country whose leaders are aware the reason why Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed, yet, believed that God will fold His arms and allow this evil to continue. Except for the few elects in America, that is why the mercy of God still abounds for the Country. American should be prepared for her extinction as a great nation unless the country turn over a new leaf and repent from her ungold expedition. Let God continue to bless America, President Obama should be careful. With agape love from Nigeria.
