Exclusion in Tampa

Blacking Out GOP Racism

by LINN WASHINGTON, Jr.

The news media have failed once again to report a significant story about an example of the racism always so obvious at Republican National Conventions.

That story this time is not about the usual paucity of black delegates participating in the GOP’s quadrennial presidential candidate nominating confab (evident to anyone viewing video of the convention floor) or about Republican leaders lamely decrying Democrats for “falsely” claiming the GOP exploits racial prejudice.

Rather, the story persistently missed by mainstream news media this time concerns the failure of the GOP to include black-owned businesses in the economic opportunities arising from its nominating convention.

This exclusion belies the GOP proclamations that it is a champion of both business opportunity and of even-handedness.

The recently concluded Republican National Convention in Tampa Bay pumped an estimated $153-million into that region’s economy.

However, very few black businesses around Tampa received any revenue from RNC-related expenditures.

The presidents of the Tampa Bay Black Chamber of Commerce and the Sun Coast African American Chamber of Commerce both said economic exclusion ruled at Tampa’s RNC event.

“There was no big tent of inclusion,” said Tampa Bay Black Chamber head Willis Bowick. “The RNC had no real outreach to black businesses here.”

David Venson, president of the Sun Coast African American Chamber of Commerce, said a few blacks businesses received contracts, mainly food service, but it was very minor.

“The RNC provided opportunities to white-owned businesses first. There were very limited opportunities for blacks, and those opportunities were not even made available until the last minute,” Venson said.

Bowick and Venson were interviewed a few hours before Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, esponding to a question about charges of racism consistently leveled agaiinst the Republican Party, told CBS Evening News anchor Scott Pelley that he supported “civil rights and equal opportunity.”

Tampa Black Chamber head Bowick voiced a belief held by many blacks that both the Republican and Democratic parties “take advantage of the African American community…”

The exclusion of black owned Tampa Bay businesses from that recent RNC paralleled the black business exclusion that was evident during the 2008 RNC in Minnesota –- exclusion which was also overlooked by the mainstream media at the time.

Only the black-owned Minnesota Spokesman-Reporter newspaper reported on that 2008 black business exclusion.

“None of that convention money trickled down. We have significant businesses that could have benefited that didn’t,” Spokesman reporter Charles Hallman said in an August 2008 interview about his coverage headlined: “Republican Convention Host Committee overlooks Black businesses.”

When the GOP held its 2000 nominating convention in Philadelphia, which was extravagantly themed around racial inclusiveness, the mainstream media failed to find the festering story about the exclusion of black-owned businesses in the Delaware Valley. Only Philadelphia’s black-owned media reported this economic apartheid.

Months before that August 2000 RNC in Philadelphia, the then vice-chairwoman of the GOP’s minority outreach/recruitment initiative, Faye M. Anderson, resigned publicly from her post, expressing her frustration at that party’s “pattern of racial blunders.”

Anderson, in an August 2000 New York Times commentary, stated it was “past time for the party to move beyond the oratory of inclusion.”

Days before the August 2012 RNC in Tampa Bay, one of that city’s most prominent Republican Party activists, W.J. Robinson, similarly resigned from the GOP, citing his frustration with the GOP’s lack of response to African American issues including the lack of black business inclusion at the RNC.

Robinson, like Anderson in 2000, said his resignation arose largely from his seeing so many instances of GOP officials (locally, across Florida and nationally) putting their feet in their mouths around issues involving race and racism.

“I started getting [snubbed] by the Party for speaking out for black concerns. My thing with the GOP was always getting opportunities for black businesses,” Robinson said. “We tried to help everybody instead of operating on a partisan basis.”

Robinson, who owns an engineering consulting company, said he couldn’t even generate GOP support for publishing a small directory of African American-owned Tampa Bay businesses for distribution at the RNC –- a project that Robinson envisioned as showing that the “Republican Party is concerned with black people.”

Robinson, a GOP activist since 1999, said he witnessed things for blacks increasingly worsen within the GOP during the past few years paralleling the ascendancy of Tea Party influence.

“The new crew changed the landscape,” Robinson said. “There is nothing for black folks in this Tea Party mentality. With the GOP they do not even give us trickle-down crumbs.”

The mainstream media presented dozens of stories from the Tampa RNC concerning on the defection of former black Democratic Congressman Artur Davis to the Republican Party.

Yet there were no Tampa convention-generated mainstream media articles listed in the LexisNexis database about W.J. Robinson’s resignation from the GOP. That high-profile defection made front-page news only in the black-owned Florida Sentinel Bulletin newspaper.

In contrast to the black business exclusion at the Tampa RNC, black businesses apparently are receiving more equitable access to economic opportunities generated by the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, NC.

Herb White, Editor of the black-owned Charlotte Post newspaper, said, “The Democrats did have a goal to work with people or color, veteran-owned businesses, women-owned business and businesses owned by gays and lesbians.”

White added, “There has been some tangible proof of minorities getting contracts from the DNC.”

A front-page article in the August 30th edition of Canada’s National Post newspaper provided compelling evidence of the unwillingness of mainstream media in North America to present probing coverage on the topic of Republican Party racim.

The central thrust of that article was the quoting of Republican Party leaders bashing the Obama administration, the Democrats and the liberal media for constantly playing the “race card” to make the GOP “seem racist.”

The National Post’s article omitted important context such as referencing the ugly race-baiting resorted to during the Republican presidential primary campaign by candidates Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum.

When referencing criticisms of “Republican-led” Voter ID laws, the article in the conservative-leaningNational Post blacked-out facts documenting that in-person voter fraud is extraordinarily rare and that such ID laws disproportionately disenfranchise non-whites.

That article also ignored the GOP’s history of assaults on affirmative-action, a governmental and court initiative ironically initiated by Republican President Richard Nixon who wanted to provide economic opportunities to black businesses disadvantaged by decades of America’s legalized segregation.

That National Post article, while quoting GOP leaders like Haley Barbour, the former Mississippi governor and Republican Party chair, did not quote black Republican critics like Raynard Jackson who’s insightfully examined GOP prejudicial practices this year.

For example, Jackson, in a Washington Post commentary published two days before that Canadian newspaper article, again criticized the lack of top black staff in the Mitt Romney campaign.

Curiously, that August 30th Canadian article did refer to an August 28th Washington Post article criticizing Republican Party racism published on the same day as Jackson’s WP commentary. Jackson’s article clashed with that Canadian article’s slant asserting that the liberal media was maliciously assailing the GOP.

Critiques of Raynard Jackson are similar to 2000 when Faye M. Anderson decried the GOP’s illusion-of-inclusion involving blacks and Hispanics, where that party seeks support from persons of color without supporting issues important of to those groups.

In 2000, Anderson criticized Republican candidate George W. Bush for addressing the NAACP’s convention that year without addressing “issues of concern to the group’s members” -– the same criticism Jackson raised about Romney’s 2012 NAACP convention address.

Jackson, in a July 12th commentary, faulted the mainstream media for downplaying the real “leaders” in the black community: businessmen and businesswomen.

“Black business leaders are the most important entry point to the Black community and Republicans, of all people, are totally ignorant of this fact,” Jackson wrote.

Black Athletes & The Black Movement Vs. Selling Their Brand

Back in the day, most Black athletes were not only about the business of winning, they were about the advancement of our people and improving our quality of life. These brave warriors not only took hits and punches in their respective sports, many lost revenue and major endorsements to promote Black Power and to keep our voice relevant in the political arena as well as the sports arena.

Significantly starting with the breaking out of Michael Jordan and others to follow; sure they are great athletic stars but they are making conscious choices to not take political sides. Instead they elect to become “brands” and sell their voices to the highest bidder.

Everyone associates MJ with Nike, but how many people want to take him to the hole on the sweatshops and Nike debate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nike_sweatshops)? Why won’t MJ take his money and create a Black factory in the urban areas, or demand that Nike do so?

Magic Ervin is known for doing business in the Black community but the list of Black Athlete Entrepreneurs grows shorter with every sport season gone by. Most are electing to create foundations (tax write offs some and others are legit foundations) and some are electing to put their money into causes, but yet and still very few are lending their power to our movement. They are not (to coin a current phrase) “taking their talents” back to the hood of things.

Muhammad Ali caused a national debate by not serving in the military. John Carlos and Tommy Smith shocked the world with their black-gloved fist held high to show Black solidarity. Now, the only movement we see is the campaigning for draft picks or monetary rights to jerseys and apparel. A far cry from the movement that was started not so long ago. We are still not free in this country yet WE entertain billions, even across the globe and create a ridiculous amount of revenue for the NBA and NFL cartels! Please see this article on how much they actually make off the backs of our people. Yet we see very little coming back to the Black community.

http://oneluvsports.blogspot.com/2011/06/one-luv-sports-evil-trolls.html

And if we are not seeing enough of them acting a fool on Twitter or some other social networking site, now their wives and baby mommas are reaping the rewards by showing up on reality TV, showcasing to the entire world the ignorance people to some degree are associating with modern Black culture.

No we all don’t have weave and we all are not angry! TV is a messed up place right now!

Who is the next Jim Brown, Kareem Abdul, Bill Russell, John Carlos, Tommy Smith, or Muhammad of our time?

Is it time to stop helping the Kobe’s, Lebron’s, Williams Sisters, and Tiger’s launch their brands and refocus them back to the real cause of empowerment, civil rights, and moving the entire Black race forward?

Peace Family,

In 1968, John Carlos and Tommy Smith took a stand. After medaling in the ’68 Olympics they climbed up on the podium quietly slipped a single black glove on their hand and with their medals draped around their necks, lifted their gloved fist above their heads as a salute to the millions of African-Americans at home who had yet to obtain their Civil Rights.

During those same Olympics, the future Heavy Weight Champion, George Foreman took a stand of his own. After winning the Gold medal in boxing, Foreman took a small American flag and paraded around the ring waving it gleefully, the antithesis of John Carlos and Tommy Smith.

One year earlier, another boxer made a huge sacrifice to take a stand against something he did not believe in. Muhammad Ali refused to take the step forward symbolizing the induction into the United States Army. Ali believed that the Vietnam War was unjust and that Blacks in America were being oppressed by the same government he was being asked to defend. No doubt Ali paid a heavy price for displaying such courage out of the ring. He was stripped of his title, denied the opportunity to make a living in his chosen profession (boxing) and generally vilified by the power structure. Ali never wavered. Today, he is known simply as the greatest!

Ah-Ha….The Old “Keep ‘em Focused on Nonsense Trick”.

Black people, African Americans, Nubians, Bilalians, Niggers, whatever you call yourself or choose to answer to, please stay focused.  When did gay marriage, immigration reform, Basketball Wives or Casey Anthony become critical issues in the pursuit of Black Power?   Do not be deceived….watch for the hand behind the scene.  Tavis and Sharpton fueding or whether The President is Black enough are sidebar issues.  we can get back to that ish once we rebuild the Black community/family.  Lets get our people working and healthy.  We still have folks in our community with no electricity in their homes,  no telephones and in some instances plumbing that rivals third-world countries. If you were a member of one of the free and functioning ethnic groups in America you could spend your time debating such frivolousness.  Black people do not have that luxury….stopping  the daily MURDERS, sexual assaults, robberies and the general breakdown of Black society must be the focus.  Distractions can be fun but nation bulding is serious business and its later than you think….chop, chop.

No Longer Stuck… in the Valley of the DOLLS

This piece is being written specifically to hopefully shed  luminance on the BLACK DOLL, WHITE DOLL Syndrome:

Why a Black child will chose a White Doll over a Black doll. This started first coming to the world’s wonderment when in 1939, husband and wife psychologists, Kenneth Clark and Mamie Phipps, devised a study where it was shown that Black children would chose a White doll before choosing a Black one. Said case study was propelled to international attention though when from his tireless effort Attorney Thurgood Marshall prevailed in getting The highest court to overturn the ‘Separate But Equal’ doctrine in place at that time. That time being 2:00p.m. May the 17, 1954. The case had been Brown vs. the Board Of Education. Which took place in the city of Topeka.  In the State Of Kansas. In the Country of The United States o America.  With a gargantuan force that came to decidedly break the camel’s back;  the Attorney for the Organization that initiated the suit, and The Organization’s Legal Defense and Educational Fund Advisor, the VERY Honorable Thurgood Marshall, argued successfully for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.  Speaking for The Supreme Court, himself, and on behalf of the other Justices, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the land Earl Warren, made the long awaited, though tearfully prayed for, announcement in favor of the NAACP!

Attorney Thurgood Marshall had used the experiment with the dolls, and the Black children to put the stamp of victory on his case for The NAACP.

Now comes Henry Jackson. He contends that this phenomenon is no where near any phenomenon. He intends to show the Reader (jury) that this LEARNED BEHAVIOR is just that LEARNED!  And it is  gotten by these Black children from two (2) sources. One of them you already know, but did not know that you already knew it. The other one he shall explain to both you, and the Research Community et al.

NUMBER ONE: The first, and by far more evil culprit of the two are the MEDIA. This is to include different varieties of hidden agenda children’s games also. And that Black athletics, and musical artists are just as well at fault, and share a huge amount of the blame, therefore guilt, is without doubt paramount. I do not know if their conduct is dictated by their handlers or themselves. But then too it probably goes back to the Giant MEDIA Empire. As Black heros and heroines gain fame and money; they start to use the Skin Lightening procedures available. And their hair progressively continuously goes from black to a progressive shade of blond. Then their processed/relaxed/permed/multi-colored hair is seen on the MEDIA’s magazine covers, etc. The entire gamut is transversed from nose jobs to bleached epidermises! All unnatural. What?  And you don’t think the children are watching?  Then many seek to marry a lighter hued person then themselves. The Black child sees all of this. Some celebrities marry White! Yes, this too the child sees!  The Legendary Michael Jackson went 100%.  Michael ‘became’ the White doll!  Emphasis emphatically added!

I think the child at times gets the wrong information from their parents. In that they do talk about, and against each other. Black parents might bad talk another Black individual, upset, but not really meaning any real harm. But the young child does not distinguish the difference. All she/he hears are derogatory terms such as black bastard, black bitch, nigger, motherfuckin’ nappy headed this and that. And very sadly, the list goes on! Then society wonders how children are able to profane like they have an Academicianship Certificate in Profanity. Well they get it from you the guardian(s), or other children who in turn got it from their parent(s); or the all encompassing MEDIA. Oh,oh! There is that word again.

MEDIA! Advertisers target, by way of the MEDIA, the money! Who has the money? White folks! The lowest minority of folks have the highest majority of the wealth. Now, it is all about the all mighty dollar. So the MEDIA has to make those who have the money look even better so that this group can put money into the pockets of the advertisers so that they then put money into the pockets of the manufacturers who in turn put even more money into the overflowing pockets of the MEDIA…. World control and domination.   Confused yet?  Allow me to explain then please.  If you will.

The MEDIA by way of hook or crook make the World’s shot callers look good. It, the MEDIA, make disappear the sins of the CLASS ELITE. They too are White. These Elites send troops into other Countries to slaughter the poor populace in the name of greed.  In the name of domination.  Tyranny!  The intention is to divide and control dark pigmented people!

That is the meaning in the arcane MASONIC SYMBOL the SQUARE, and the RULE! Divide and conquer! Divide and conquer.  Divide and RULE!  Divide and control the World! The SCULL and the CROSS BONES!  The black flag of the Jolly Roger!  Anarchy but with a knowing CONTROLLING HAND!

The News Conglomerate knows not to broadcast that News about the take over of Nations done solely for the out right theft of that Country’s Prime Material ! The MEDIA cleans up the mess though through lies and propaganda. White Washed, they the thieves come out all white and brand new.  Then more Use of tax payer’s money in planning, and equiping for the next invasion.  The next take over of a defenseless sovereign non White Nation!

These atrocities to other peoples are not heard on the News Programs though. What is heard is about the Black homeless guy with all odds against him, harmlessly asleep on the cold sidewalk.   That is who, that is what is captioned on television’s Morning News Cast that the child overhears just before the Black children are about to walk out of the door on their way to school where for hours on end very little if anything is ever said about any Black beings that might have done something (anything at all) to benefit society. The talk of the town is about the Black homeless guy, the Black shoot out, the Black drug bust, the Black pregnancy/abortion rate. The Black unemployment rate because Blacks are lazy.

Never mention to these same Black children that it was their forefathers that coerced the White men (cavemen) Neanderthals, and White women (cavewomen) out of the caves of the Northern Caucus Mountains of Europe, and taught them to walk erect! Like we [ to use their term ] BLACK Homo Sapiens walk(ed)…. No where is it told how Black people showed these people that it was okay to wash the layers of caked on filth, and dirt from their bodies.  Because these people erroneously thought that the filthiness warded off sickness!  Never does History mention how men from all over the known world went to Amexem, Thebes, Wo’se, Nowe, Kemit, and Alkebulan.  All different names for the same place AFRICA!  They went to learn the secrets of greatness held only by the Black geniuses of Amexem, of Africa!   These men traveled many miles in order to learn at the feet of the WISDOM MASTERS!  To learn at BLACK feet!  The Great Alexander went and stole some of this great knowledge. Where he took it to was to the yet White heathens of Europe.  Where through the arch plagiarizer Aristotle; light (knowledge) was imparted to the very savage, and backwards Countries of Europe.  These priceless stolen scrolls, and artifacts, are now housed in the GREAT VATICAN City!  Without doubt the abode of SATAN. THE ANTI-BLACK RACE, ANTI-CHRIST demon!  Who along with his vile, evil cohorts (for now) own the Planet Earth!  The Planet Earth was built from the ingenuity, the sweat, the blood,  the abuse, and the tears of the Black MAN! Tell those Black children this bit of information too oh ye diabolical manipulators of the MEDIA.  Let it be known that it is you also you bastard MEDIA you, that control thus corrupt the Black children’s purposely designed to be debilitating – text books!

By all of this good White people, charade, the Black child’s Psyche is bombarded 24/7 with the White’s faultless perfection, with the White’s faultless qualities. And the Scientists do not know why the Black child consistently over the years, after the many studies, still chooses to this day; to pick the White doll? Hell! Under these conditions that we live Reader, give this same test to some grown Black folks, and I deplore you to PLEASE not feel offended when you see one or two of them walking around the Test Site smiling, hugging on a White doll as well. Looking at the genital area to ascertain if it is a male or female doll; and if it pees!

NUMBER TWO: When African children interact with Caucasian children here too key data is gleaned as to why the tiny African hand reaches out first for the Caucasian doll!

When African children are together unsupervised a hierarchy is soon worked out among them. The toughest ones get most of the marbles not having to ever risk loosing any of her/his marbles.  This same scenario of pecking orders applies for unsupervised African siblings in their homes as well.  This standard holds true for Caucasian children too by the way.

A different story unfolds though when these two groups of children are placed together unsupervised mind you!  Unsupervised an African child that might have been ostracized by his/her perspective group in the other sample group just might turn out to be the dominate one in the weaker group.  But assuredly not the child on or near the bottom rung for sure.

This must also have to do with the proven scientific fact.  That an African child develops much faster than a Caucasian child with the very same birth comparison.

So, back to my point.  The African child who was bullied in his/her group is king or queen in the other group.  And that information is not lost on the African child.  This child was not appreciated by her/his peers, but overnight is PRESIDENT of the sandbox when playing with Caucasian children.  And is sudden endowed with Executive Powers!

Therefore when asked which doll this Black child would prefer, of course the child chooses the doll from the group that gives no negative feedback to the child.  THIS DOLL REMINDS THE CHILD OF THE OTHER LITTLE ONES WHERE HE/SHE REIGNS SUPREME!  Their buddies!

When asked which doll (except for coloration the dolls are replicas i.e. exactly alike) is the uglier of the two the African child points towards the black doll.  Of course.  No Caucasian child has ever with frowning face, and bulging eyes taken anything from the African child; that was always the other African children! The BAD children!   It was the other ‘mean’ African children who took his/her toys, and shoved her/him out of the sandbox face down scratched and bleeding.  Pride gone!

What sounds feasible to me as well, in the cases where The African child chose the African doll, is that that particular child is a dominate one.  And for all likelihood could have just as well chosen a Caucasian doll as well.  It would merely depend on what frame of mind the child was in, when asked the question which doll they preferred. It really would not matter for he or she is not intimidated by either group.  But of my examples Numbers One or Number Two, Number One; the MEDIA. overwhelmingly supersedes Number two as the far worse villain by far.

Wake up Black Race!  I beseech you!  I am hollering! If you do not do for yourselves; one for the other, you are collectively DOOMED!  Black people is it that one eye has been lost due to the catharses of  SLAVERY?  And you have a vision deficit in the remaining eye! Can you not see that you have to hold each other aloft or parish individually?  Can you not see that you,  you and you, are your very own salvation?  That you and you are your own DEITIES! If ALL OF YOU Black folks can not see it then can you not intuitate then that god (sic) has already chosen. WAKE UP!  You all’s god has chosen The WHITE DOLL!

So what is it Black people?  The Blue Pill or The Red Pill?  Well?  Which one?  If you do not decide it will be decided for you!  Trust me.  You DO NOT want that!  That is funny!

Lastly, I wonder was there any criteria in these studies ever put in place to prevent the African child from acting in a given way, knowledgeable that the adult observers were in expectation of a specific performance from them?  That would taint (contaminate) the study in such a manner as to actually nullify said results.

Upon ending, and in my mind anyway;  I whole heartedly believe that I have without reserve defended my Dissertation Thesis.  In other words I have proven what I claimed to achieve in my initial theses statements.

Post Script:  Should any Black person or White person feel slighted or bitten by this article <\/> too damn bad!  Get over it! For this too shall pass!

Gil-Scott Heron Gone But Never Forgotten.

Gil Scott...View ImageView Full Size Image

Gil-Scott Heron died last week.  The news said, “He had a history of drug use.” One could not argue with that.   However, Gil-Scott Heron’s life was more than just his bout with substance abuse…. I remember hearing him say, “Like the forest they buried beneath the highway…..never had a chance to grow.”   This shook my mind, back in ’78!  How many of us ever stop to think that there is a forest buried underneath I-43.  Why do you think they have to keep patching up the cracks?  That forest is still fighting to break through and be what it was meant to be, just like a lot of our young people and shit some of us old heads as well. This was early in my young, Black life. Young people, I implore you to check this brother out, seriously.  If you dig thought-provoking, conscience-raising art, Hip-Hop, Rap or just like hearing true words spoken; consider also that some of his stuff is 40 years old.

In reality as Gil-Scott passes away with a 20 second sound byte, some of us would be wise to reflect on the fact that our day is getting closer.  What will they say about you when you are gone?  Did I do anything of value?  God knows the kids have given us some cause for concerns.  Did I create any beauty?  Will they even give you and your life a  second thought when you are gone ?Gil-Scott Heron, you did your part.  Job well done Blackman, Black Poet.    The revolution will not be televised or online.  Enjoy your well-deserved rest brother.  The struggle continues.
