Say it: “Officer, if you’re asking that I consent to a search of my car, the answer is – no, I do not consent.” You don’t have to give a reason why – it’s your right to not give such consent. But, if you feel you must give a reason, tell the cop you never let any stranger go through your stuff – and you don’t know him/her.
They tell you they’re going to search after you’ve withheld consent – get out of the way and stop talking. Once they finish their search ask if you are free to go. If not free to go, tell them you want a lawyer and you will not answer any more questions until you do.
If they are asking or trying to trick you into giving consent, that means they can’t search without it. Say no, stick by that refusal and the traffic stop will often be over.
