Juneteenth 2015: A Call to Reaffirmation in the Black Community

Happy Juneteenth Day my Beloved Community! Many in our community do not appreciate this day or what it stands for. It is a good time to take at least 24 hours to reflect on the sacrifices made by our ancestors so long ago.

“We’ve Come This Far by Faith, Leaning on the Lord…”

One of my favorite gospel songs of all time still holds true today. In the wake of a national tragedy in South Carolina at one of the most historic places of worship and community, and our country facing many important racial Social Justice Issues, we still keep pressing on towards freedom leaning on God’s Divine Mercy that set us free from slavery officially June 19, 1865 in Galveston Texas.

Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. said that freedom is not only from something but to something. It is with this hope that we continue to works towards creating peace and a better community with our brothers and sisters. In order to be the Beloved Community MLK dreamt of we must truly live as a united community.

Juneteenth Day is the official day when the slaves learned of their freedom. Here in Milwaukee, we enjoy one of the largest celebrations in the country. Today there is a parade followed by festivities all along MLK Drive.

Juneteenth

I hope that this year’s day is a peaceful as last year’s activities and even better. I pray our young people are not seen as “thugs” but future potential. Us grown folk would be wise to talk to the youth and hear them out. Young people show some respect, especially to your elders. Instead of blasting your music and staying on the cell phones, take in the history that surrounds you.

As we grace MLK Drive, let us remember this very street is sacred earth that brought our local community to freedom from such things as unfair housing, police brutality, and racism.

With the first Black President in office it is an excellent opportunity to reaffirm and reposition ourselves as Beloved Community. True peace, freedom, and justice will only come when we begin the healing from within.

Remember to buy Black and spread the love today! See you down there.

Peace Family,

WW
